3.en.13 From Old English to Modern English

Languages are never static. They are in a constant process of change, which is triggered when two languages are in contact. The history of England, and later Britain, is full of moments of contact: wars, conquests, invasions, scientific developments…

As you know, English is a Germanic language. While it holds a certain resemblance to nowadays German, it also has lots of borrowings from Romance languages. In fact, we can say things in different ways in English, using Germanic and Romance words, and they will have different connotations. In this video, you can see why:

Now that we have learnt there is a difference in register between Germanic words (informal) and Latinate words (formal), we can also consider other giant leaps that changed the way we speak English today: Shakespeare, who coined many words and idioms; the British Empire, with all the borrowings from countries all over the world; the invention of the Internet, etc.

Here you are a brief, but illustrative video of all these changes if you want to learn more:

With all this information, you can sure review the activities we did in class:

So, if you had to choose 5 turning points for the English Language, which would they be? And, most importantly, what are the ones to come?

3.en.12 History vs. stories

The terms history and story are a bit confusing in English. What is the difference between them?

However, there are cases in which history and stories overlap. It is the case of some of the most famous fantasy fictions, which use important events in history as their sources:

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings in the aftermath of the First World War. Although he said there are no direct correspondences between men, hobbits, elves and orcs and the different armies fighting during this global conflict, the links are quite straightforward.

Resultado de imagen de game of thronesThe same can be said for the popular TV series Game of Thrones and the books on which it is based, A Song of Ice and Fire. G.R.R. Martin, the author, said the two main families, the Starks and the Lannisters were directly drawn from the War of the Roses in England. The Yorks confronted the Lancasters in a harsh fight for the thone. Do the names ring a bell?

Katniss Everdeen rebels against President Snow in the Capitol, a clear reference to fascist and dictatorial regimes, in The Hunger Games. The games themselves are inspired from gladiator fights back in Roman times.

And I am sure you can think of many more!

Time travel has also explored this overlap between reality and fiction. The potential danger of time travel is that the traveller can interfere with events and turn history upside down. Remember what almost happened to Martin’s family in Back to the Future? Or the special care Harry, Hermione and Ron had to take when using the Time Turner to save Buckbeack, the hypogriff, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban?

With all this information, it is now time for you to reflect on:

1. A historical moment you would like to change and the repercussions it would have in history.

2. A fictional moment you would transform and its impact on the storyline.

Do not forget to use 3rd conditional structures. You may check this site if you need to review this grammar aspect or this one in case you need some extra practice.

3.en.11 Giant leaps in history

These days we have been talking about giant leaps in history and we defined them as moments that change the way societies work. All of you were familiar with the turning points that mark the division between big eras in history.

However, we agreed that these were chosen from a very European perspective. Eli shared with us five milestones he considered key in the development of US history:
1. The Declaration of Independence
2. The Civil War, confronting northern and southerns over slavery and economy
3. The Second World War
4. The Cold War, a conflict between capitalist and communist countries, in particular, the US and the USSR
5. The 9/11 attacks and their aftermath

Eli admitted his choices were quite political and that he could have mentioned scientific discoveries and cultural hits, as well. It was then your choice to find 5 highlights in Spanish or Majorcan history.

Finally, we have considered history from the point of view of women. Below, you can check the texts we used in class. Could you think of any other moments?

2.cat.22.
