1.en.1 Welcome to Ramon LLull: some acronyms to set off. What are CIL and SE?

Dear students.

My name is María Loredo and this year I will be your English teacher. I would like to use the blog to welcome you and to tell you some things about how this year will be organized. Why are you in this group? Well, you sat an exam in June and those of you who got better marks in Catalan, Spanish, English and Maths, were given the option to join the European Sections. The European Sections is a program in which English and/or French are used to teach some subjects of the curriculum other than English or French. In our school, you will have Art in English in 1st ESO, Science in English in 2nd ESO and Science in English in 3rd and 4th ESO. In previous years, we also had Maths in English  in 3rd ESO and Music in English in 1st ESO. 

In English, we’ll be together 4 hours a week : 3 hours  as the rest of first ESO  groups, and one extra session as your group is part of the European Sections scheme. With this extra English session,  we’ll help you  face  Art lessons in English this year, and Science in English in second ESO  next year. Nuria Salord, your art teacher, will also use English to teach you,  so with such an input by the end of the year your English will be very good indeed! On Thursdays, Liz Kindelan, an American language assistant,  will give support to Nuria and to me. You’ll have two teachers in the class. Lucky you!

Your group, apart from being part of the European Sections,  is  part of a project called CIL, an acronym  for Language Integrated Curriculum. Your language teachers, Emili, Bernat, and myself, will be working together on the same topics, preparing outings and collaborating on creating materials and activities for your group. This year will be our third year working together and we are really happy with the experience. As a team, we have agreed on teaching without textbooks, using the blog as a platform to present materials and  working on the same topics. We’ll organise outings together and you’ll have  to carry out common tasks in three different languages. 

Virtudes, the German teacher,  and Inés, the French teacher  will also join us in some occasions. After all, we are all language teachers, so it is only natural that we teach you the same things. If you are interested in finding out the things we did in 2009 and 2010, you only need to visit our blogs: Saps que tè dic ( 2010/11) , Castígate (2009/10) and Castígate 2 (2010/11)   . You can surf  the blogs, gossip a little and look at some pics.

The first topic this year that will keep us working for a while is our city, Palma. We shall work on different aspects: signs, buildings, transport, shops, museums and problems that affect city life.  There will also be some outings that will be as important as our class work.

Apart from cities, this first term we shall be working on names. Names are like our presentation card. There’s a lot in a name, and we hope you’ll have fun playing with names a bit.

Finally, it is also important in these first weeks to learn how to present  homework, how to take notes and how to organize the information you get during lessons.  We’ll use some of the posts that we made for the former students of 1ESO E and some examples from their work. Maybe we’ll ask them to come to our class to explain to you how to do it. What do you think, would you like to have 2nd or third year students teaching you for a day? 

There are also aspects concerning computer skills you will have to become familiar with.You‘ll need to learn how to use collaborative tools such as google docs, mail groups, power point presentations, updating information in the blog   and keeping an on line diary.
